Cameroon receives strong solar irradiation across most of its territory, especially in the northern and central regions. This makes solar energy a powerful solution for expanding electricity access in both urban centers and off-grid rural areas.

Annual Solar Irradiation: Ranges from 4.5 to 6.0 kWh/m²/day, with the highest values in the north and central savanna zones

Cameroon experiences varying temperatures due to its diverse geography:
North (Sahelian/Savanna zones): Hot and dry, with temperatures ranging from 28°C to 42°C
Central (Tropical regions): Moderate, ranging from 22°C to 32°C
Southwest (Coastal/rainforest): Humid and warm, 24°C to 30°C
While higher temperatures in the north may slightly reduce solar module efficiency, the consistently strong solar radiation more than compensates, especially when using high-temperature-tolerant panels with proper ventilation and installation spacing.
Cameroon’s electricity grid, operated by ENEO Cameroon S.A., covers much of the urban areas but remains limited in rural regions, where electrification rates are below 25%. Nationwide, only about 60–65% of the population has access to electricity.
Power generation is currently dominated by hydropower, with diesel generators used for backup and in remote communities. However, frequent grid outages, voltage instability, and low coverage in rural zones make decentralized solar systems highly attractive for reliable and sustainable power supply.

Hybrid Systems: Ideal for hotels, commercial facilities, and urban hospitals, where backup power is essential due to regular blackouts
Mini-Grids: Increasingly adopted in clustered rural settlements as community electrification models
Solar systems with battery storage are gaining interest among both public institutions and private users to ensure 24-hour access to electricity.
In Cameroon’s northern regions (Far North, North, and Adamawa), dust levels are moderate to high, especially during the dry Harmattan season (November to March), when Saharan dust blows southward.
In contrast, the southern and coastal regions experience low dust, due to heavy vegetation and frequent rainfall.
Cleaning frequency should be adjusted based on location:
Northern Cameroon: Clean panels every 2–3 weeks during dry season
Southern Cameroon: Monthly cleaning is typically sufficient

Cameroon has two major climatic zones:
North: Low to moderate humidity
South & Coast: High humidity year-round (70% to 95%), with very heavy rainfall from March to November
Solar installations in humid and rainy regions like Douala, Limbe, and Yaoundé must use:
IP66-rated enclosures
UV- and moisture-resistant cabling
Well-sealed inverters and junction boxes
Proper drainage design to prevent water stagnation
Anti-fungal and corrosion-resistant materials are especially important in the tropical rainforest belt.
While most of Cameroon is inland, coastal cities like Douala and Kribi are exposed to moderate salt corrosion risks due to proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.
For these zones:
Use marine-grade aluminum for racking
Opt for stainless steel fasteners and galvanized components
Implement regular maintenance for seaside installations
Inland and high-altitude systems are less affected and may require only standard anti-corrosion protections.
Cameroon’s government is actively encouraging renewable energy expansion, and has adopted multiple frameworks and strategies:
National Development Strategy 2020–2030 includes clean energy targets
Law No. 2011/022 promotes private sector involvement in electricity generation, including solar
Import tax exemptions available for some renewable energy equipment
Public-private partnerships (PPPs) encouraged for rural electrification and mini-grid development
Support from international partners like the World Bank, AfDB, and GIZ for solar project financing and technical assistance
While a formal feed-in tariff is not yet implemented, regulatory reform is ongoing to liberalize the energy sector and enhance private investment.
